However, the effects of combined external classroom factors were not statistically significant for Puerco Rican Universities. Emphasis on tutorial participation, clinics, and study groups has been stressed by some lecturers to improve the performance of students but to no avail.Furthermore, others have conducted lecture attendance roll calls as an alternative for combating the alarming poor academic performance of students but less positive returns have been achieved. Nevertheless, the PAP systems like in the case of the school of education and humanities have been introduced together with the use of projectors in the delivery Of lectures to help the intolerant and slow learning students catch up easily but the expected returns have not helped much to improve the general academic performance of students.Moreover, an internet cafeà © in the University main Library has being in operation to help students do their research effectively but as if their efforts were in vain, the performance keeps deteriorating. Further, new departments (department of population studies among others) have been created where possible. More extraordinary, extra-curricular activities have been encouraged and the door to the counseling Centre has been wide open but still the problem of poor academic performance at the University of Zambia still persists.It is for these reasons henceforth that this study seeks to investigate the main factors that affect students academic performance at the University of Zambia so that a lasting solution can be provided to improve the quality of education in our country Zambia as a whole. RESEARCH RATIONALE A lot of countries that have developed today placed more emphasis on the importance of the educational system in spearheading technological innovation that resulted in productivity.A good example in question is the united States of America, Japan and China who formulated sound trajectory leslies that increased enrolments rates in Universities and Colleges with an understanding that, advancement in technology is dependent on having well trained students in Universities and Colleges. Equivalently, Singapore which also took the step to invest in science and technology in colleges and universities has become one of the industrialized economies in the world. Therefore, advancement in science and technology is dependent on how well a particular country trains its students.However, to have well nurtured students that can think and invent new things to develop the country, there as to be well informed policies at institutional level that creates a good conducive environme nt for learning. Apparently, such sound policies cannot be created if students challenges that may hinder good performance have not been identified and addressed. Therefore, in order for Zambia to develop, it has to emulate countries like Singapore which paid attention to the educational system by creating a good learning atmosphere for University students. However, the study investigated the factors that affect students academic performance at the university of Zambia and it sought to contribute o the body of knowledge on the factors that affect students academic Excellency at ZINNIA in particular and other such government institutions in general. It has been observed that, literature on the factors that influence academic performance of students is quite scarce and when it is available, people have to seek it through the internet.Thus the findings of this study would be put at the disposal of every student in the library so that information is readily accessed. It is also hoped that the results of this research would contribute to the formulation of sound administrative policies hat would curb the factors that contribute to the poor academic performance of students at the University of Zambia so that failure and dropouts rates can be minimized to maintain the motto of the University Service and Excellency.As articulated above however, the rationale behind the carrying out of this study was premised on four basic principles namely; the study aimed to contribute to knowledge, policy, theory, practice and as a partial fulfillment for the award of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Development Studies. Therefore, regarding its contribution to knowledge, the findings of his study will bring to the general awareness of the factors that affect students academic performance.Secondly, it will further communicate the efforts by the university management to address factors affecting students academic performance and what management has done to enhance existentialistic, creative and practical abilities according to the Trichina Theory of Intellectual Abilities (Sternberg 1 985; 1986:23). Likewise, higher learning institutions are also beneficiaries of the knowledge this study will generate in that the findings will help them to design strategies to increase dents academic performance and alleviate attrition rates.At policy level however, this study will firstly identify the main causes of the factors that affect students academic performance ranging from parents- family causal factors; teachers- academic causal factors and students -personal causal factors, (Ditz, 2003). After identifying these, it will help the government policy makers to redesign their strategic management for the institution towards formulating policies that address factors affecting students and in turn reduce their attrition rates. This will also set a platform for the attainment of he University of Sambas long term strategic goals, (School of Humanities Handbook, 2008).

As Burkett stated in Unequal Work for Unequal Pay, rather than boosting morale, in fact, the programs are having an opposite effect-and for logical reasons. Family-friendly policies include various programs that are designed to help employees balance the demands of work and family. They include alternative work arrangements and dependent care support as well as the government mandated Family and Medical Leave Act. In Unequal Work for Unequal Pay, Burkett states, family-friendliness, they say, pays by promoting loyalty and productivity, reducing absenteeism, tardiness, and turnover, and polishing a companys image. I, like Burkett, disagree with these claims and tend to agree with employees who are not married or do not have children. I believe that when work is involved everyone should be on equal ground. Why should any employee get special treatment just because they can procreate? I have two children and I want my job success to be based on merit. If I have earned it, then give it to me. If it involves benefits such as insurance coverage, then I will pay for my families share. I understand that on the days that my child is sick and required to miss school that it is my responsibility to stay home and take care of her. What Is Communication and How to Use It Effectively Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages through verbal or nonverbal means, including speech, or oral communication; writingà and graphical representations (such as infographics, maps, and charts); andà signs,à signals, and behavior. More simply, communication is said to be the creation and exchange of meaning.à Media critic and theorist James Careyà defined communication as a symbolic process whereby reality is produced, maintained, repaired and transformed in his 1992 book Communication as Culture, positing that we define our reality via sharing our experience with others. All creatures on earth have developed means in which to convey their emotions and thoughts to one another. However, its the ability of humans to use words and language to transfer specificà meanings that sets them apart from the animal kingdom. Components of Communication To break it down, in any communication there is a sender and a receiver, a message, and interpretations of meaning on both ends. The receiver gives feedback to the sender of the message, both during the messages conveyance and afterward. Feedback signals can be verbal or nonverbal, such as nodding in agreement or looking away and sighing or other myriad gestures. Theres also the context of the message, the environment its given in, and potential for interference during its sending or receipt.à If the receiver can see the sender, he or she can obtain not only the messages contents but also nonverbal communication that the sender is giving off, from confidence to nervousness, professionalism to flippancy. If the receiver can hear the sender, he or she can also pick up cues from the senders tone of voice, such as emphasis and emotion.à Rhetorical Communication- The Written Form Another thing that sets humans apart from their animal cohabiters is our use of writing as a means of communication, which has been a part of the human experience for more thanà 5,000 years. In fact, the first essay - coincidentally about speaking effectively - is estimated to be from around the year 3,000 B.C., originating in Egypt, though it wasnt until much later that the general population was considered literate. Still, James C. McCroskey notes in An Introduction to Rhetorical Communication that texts like these are significant because they establish the historical fact that interest in rhetorical communication is nearly 5,000 years old. In fact, McCroskey posits that most ancient texts were written as instructions for communicating effectively, further emphasizing early civilizations value of furthering the practice. Through time this reliance has only grown, especially in the Internet age. Now, written or rhetorical communication is one of the favored and primary means of talking to one another - be it an instant message or a text, a Facebook post or a tweet. As Daniel Boorstin observed in Democracy and Its Discontents, the most important single change in human consciousness in the last century, and especially in the American consciousness, has been the multiplying of the means and forms of what we call communication. This is especially true in modern times with the advent of texting, e-mail, and social media as forms of communicating with others around the world. With more means of communication,à there are alsoà now even more ways to be misunderstood than ever. If a message contains just the written word (such as a text or email), the sender needs to be confident in its clarity, that it cannot be misinterpreted. Emails can often come off cold or clipped without that being the intention of the sender, for example, yet its not considered professional to have emoticons in formal communication to help conveyà the proper meaning and context.à à Before You Open Your Mouth or Hit Send Before preparing your message, whether its going to be in person one-on-one, in front of an audience, over the phone, or done in writing, consider the audience wholl be receiving your information, the context, and your means to convey it. What way will be the most effective? What will you have to do to ensure its conveyed properly? What do you want to make sure that you dont convey? If its important and going to be relayed in a professional context, maybe youll practice beforehand, prepare slides and graphics, and pick out professional attire so that your appearance or mannerisms dont distract from yourà message. If its a written message youre preparing, youll likely want to proofread, make sure the recipients name is spelled correctly and read it aloud to find dropped words or clunky phrasing before sending it.
